About the project:

We’re responding to community concerns about safety at the intersection of West Coast Road and Scenic Drive in Waiatarua. As part of our road safety programme, we’re adding new measures and signage to make the intersection clearer, safer, and easier to use for all drivers.

This stretch of road has been identified as high-risk for crashes, often involving drivers losing control or head-on collisions. The project aims to improve safety for all road users.

The changes we’re making in early 2026:

  • Install New "SLOW" road marking on a red surface on Scenic Drive (south approach) to warn motorists to reduce speed.
  • Install new High Friction Surfacing on the south approach to help vehicles grip the road better, especially on the bend and near the intersection.
  • Replacing the existing curve warning signs with new intersection curve warning signs that are clearer and easier for drivers to see.

A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.

Benefits to your community:

  • Safer journeys – The improvements help reduce the risk of crashes and make it safer for everyone using the road.
  • Better road outlining & access – It’s easier for vehicles to get around the intersection and move through the area safely.
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the intersection and improves visibility between motorists accessing the road.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next:

  • Any changes to the designs will be updated on this page. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

How to contact us:

If you’d like to discuss our plans, share what you know about your area or let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a comment on our website by 26 September 2025.
