Works Update - 15 September 2026
In October 2025, we shared our plans to improve safety and visibility at the Piha Road and Scenic Drive intersection, in Waiatarua.

Engagement is finished and we are now entering the construction phase for this project. Works are scheduled to take place between 28 September and 16 October 2026 as part of the Community Network Improvement Programme.
Feedback about bus stop operations in this area was carefully considered and incorporated into the final design.
Please note that wet weather may delay the start of work. If there are significant delays, we will let the community know. Works notification letters will be delivered to the community shortly.

About the project
We’re responding to safety concerns raised by the community by making improvements to safety and visibility for motorists when travelling through the intersection of Piha Road and Scenic Drive in Waiatarua.
Our investigation showed that the current layout can be confusing and unsafe, so we’re putting in new measures and signs to make the intersection clearer and safer for everyone.
The changes we’re making
- Realing the road to improve visibility and access to make it easier to move through the intersection.
- Remove the free left-turn lane from Scenic Drive to Piha Road and move the Quinns Road stop control closer to Scenic Drive.
- Install a traffic island and reinstate grass to improve safety at the road layout.
- Restrict left turns from Piha Road for vehicles longer than 6 metres.
- Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) around the corner of Piha and Quinns Roads to clear access so vehicles can enter and exit the intersection more safely.
- Install new signs and paint new road markings to support these changes so motorists know they are approaching traffic controls at the intersection.
Benefits to your community:
- Safer journeys – The improvements help reduce the risk of crashes and make it safer for everyone using the road.
- Better road layout & access – Realigning makes it easier for vehicles to move through the intersection and the area safely without confusion.
- Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the intersection and improves visibility between motorists accessing the road.
- Improved visibility and encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the intersection, and improves visibility between motorists accessing the road.
- New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
