About the Project
We’re working on improving the road on Birkenhead Ave, and need to temporarily close the section between Pupuke Road and Onewa Road, as part of our regular maintenance programme.
This upgrade will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.

24-hour closure on the southbound lane from Glenfield
The northbound lane from Onewa Road will remain open for residents.

Digging up the old road and resurfacing the road at night to reduce disruption
Upgrading stormwater drainage
Adding a concrete foundation
Testing to ensure quality

Why
Routine checks showed the road is nearing the end of its lifespan.
Upgrading now will make it safer and prevent future issues.
The work is scheduled over the summer holiday period when the roads are quieter, to be completed before peak travel in early 2025.
The work we’ll be doing and traffic management & detours
We’ll be doing work in stages for approximately 6 weeks. We plan to finish the work on Sunday 2 February 2025 in the evening, however any significant weather events may slow our progress.
To minimise the impact on the community, we will be starting work after Christmas during the holiday break. We aim to wrap up and finish before the school term starts in 2025. We’ll be working around the clock from 7 am to 11pm to finish this work on time for the Birkenhead community.
We’ll try to start the work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you and update this webpage regularly.
Traffic delays: Especially during peak times. Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area, especially if you live along one of the detour routes.
Detours will be in place from 27th Dec 2024, so allow extra travel time. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety.
Driveway and vehicle access to your property will be restricted, while work takes place outside your property. We will personally liaise with effected residents to minimise any disruption.
Footpaths will remain accessible to local residents.
On-street parking will be limited. If your driveway is restricted, you will need to park nearby and walk home.
Some bus services will be affected – please plan ahead on the AT mobile app, follow detours and expect delays. More information is available on the affected bus stops and detour routes are available via QR codes on posters
Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
Noise: Construction will run from 7 am to 11 pm to finish as quickly as possible. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.

Before the work starts, digital signs will be set up along the route and near the town centre to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads. You can download maps here on our website.
