Birkenhead is getting a big upgrade this summer. Several projects are underway to upgrade roads, streetlights, stormwater drainage, power cables, reduce congestion and improve safety in the neighourhood.

Improvements include:

  • Improving lighting in the Birkenhead town centre - completed
  • Upgrading and resurfacing Birkenhead Avenue
  • Upgrading the Pupuke Road, Ocean View Road and Raleigh Road intersection to improve safety and reduce congestion/wait times
  • Installing new power network cables on Highbury Pass, Birkenhead Ave and Pupuke Road to support business growth in the area and improve security of supply
  • Upgrading stormwater drainage on Birkenhead Avenue to reduce the risk of flooding

We know this work can be disruptive, and we're trying to minimise the impact on the community as much as possible. Our Road Corridor Access and Coordination team have worked hard to coordinate the traffic management plans and timelines of each of these projects to minimise disruption and keep traffic flowing as much as possible, whilst also enabling the work to get done quickly.

We’ve planned this work so we can get as much done between Christmas and the start of the school term, when our roads are quietest. AT and our partners will be working as fast as possible to get these essential upgrades done on time, including working multiple shifts per day with multiple teams.

Here’s an overview of the key projects, so you know what’s coming up:

This lookahead covers the major projects in the immediate area. Note that there will still be some other minor works in the wider area, e.g. for short periods overnight or to make urgent fixes.

Vector futureproofing upgrades

Dates

14 October 2024 to ~18 December 2024 (dates subject to change due to weather)

Location

Highbury Pass, Birkenhead Avenue and Pupuke Road

How travel is affected:

The road remains open, but the lane layout may move to allow space for works.

How to get around:

There will be road cones and signs where lanes are moved.

Why Vector is doing the work:

Installing new ducting to support business growth in the area and improve security of supply.

Birkenhead Avenue road renewal works

Dates

27 December 2024 to 3 February 2025

Location

Birkenhead Avenue between Pupuke Road and Onewa Road

How travel is affected:

The southbound lane will be closed, and driveway/vehicle access will be restricted at times, when work is directly in front of your property. Cars will need to be cleared from 7pm, on street parking will be shifted to side streets and will require walking a distance.

How to get around:

Cars will only be able to travel one way – northbound - on Birkenhead Ave. Cars travelling southbound will be detoured around Pupuke Road, Raleigh Road Lake Road and Onewa Road or Eskdale Road, Birkdale Road, Waipa St and Highbury Bypass.

Why we’re doing the work:

Upgrading Birkenhead Ave with new asphalt resurfacing and better stormwater drainage. This will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.

Pupuke Road, Ocean View Road and Raleigh Road intersection upgrades

Dates

Starting April 2025 – dates to be confirmed, approximately 4 weeks

Location

Pupuke Road, Ocean View Road and Raleigh Road intersection.

How travel is affected:

Travelling around Birkenhead

Allow extra time when you travel, especially during peak times. Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area, especially if you live along one of the detour routes. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety.

Some bus services will be affected when works are in front of a bus stop or roads are closed. Please visit the AT mobile app to see if your stop is closed or bus detoured, and the nearest alternative stops.

Living near a work site

Driveway and vehicle access to your property may be restricted if work takes place outside your property. We will personally liaise with you to make sure you still have access when you need it.

On-street parking may be limited. If works are happening where you usually park, you may need to park nearby and walk home.

Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.

Noise: Construction may run into the night to finish works as quickly as possible. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.

Timing

We’ll try to start and finish the work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather could mean a delayed timeline.

About our road maintenance programme

As Auckland grows, so too does the need to maintain and upgrade our roads. Roads experience wear and tear and need regular maintenance and upgrades to fix bumps, cracks and potholes, make them more durable and prevent future issues. This helps ensure drivers have a safer, smoother journey with less delays and disruptions.

With more and more cars on the road every day, we’re working our way across Auckland to upgrade our roads, extending their lifespans and preventing the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.

Wherever possible, we plan this work with partners including Auckland Council, Vector, Watercare and Chorus to do upgrade works together, so we can minimise disruption to communities. This means areas may also benefit from upgraded phone services, water and wastewater services, streetscapes, power services, lighting, crossings, bus stops and more.
