About this project

As part of Auckland Transport’s Road Safety Programme, we are engaging with the community regarding minor safety improvements along the bend outside #829 Whangaparaoa Road, Manly, which has been identified as a high-risk location.

Within the five-year period (2020-2024), five crashes were reported at or near to this bend, including head on and loss of control type crashes. These included two serious injury crashes, one minor injury crash and two non-injury crashes.

The planned improvements would help to increase driver awareness of the bend, encourage lower vehicle speeds, and improve overall safety at this location.

The changes we’re making in 2026

  • Install new crossing islands within the flush median along the bend where people can safely wait to cross the road, while maintaining access to nearby properties.
  • Replace existing chevron signs with new signs to advise drivers of safer speeds for the bend from both directions.
  • Paint new no stopping at all times road markings (broken yellow lines) along the southern side of Whangaparaoa Road to help maintain access, improve visibility for vehicles to navigate this bend safely. This change will result in the reallocation of road space and the removal of approximately 10 on-street parking spaces.

A drawing showing the changes can be found here.

Benefits to the community:

  • Improves driver awareness of the bend, encourage lower vehicles speeds, and reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes at this location.
  • Supports community connections. Shows a commitment to the safety of the entire community and nearby residents.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
