Project update

After reviewing feedback on both designs, we conducted further traffic assessments to help finalise our plans. To alleviate congestion, reduce bus delays, improve safety and deliver the best outcomes for the wider community while balancing the needs of everyone using Maioro Street, our decision is to implement dynamic lanes.

Project background

Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them.

Maioro Street is a key arterial road which provides a link between New Lynn and State Highway 20. Maioro Street experiences heavy peak traffic congestion on a daily basis with approximately 40,000 vehicles/day.

During the morning and afternoon peak periods approximately 16 buses per hour use the route in the peak flow directions. The heavy peak congestion results in travel time delays along Tiverton Road through to Maioro Street for buses and general traffic.

In 2022, we consulted the community about dynamic lanes and safety improvements on Maioro Street. The aim of these changes was to improve bus reliability, safety, and the movement of people through this route. Although we received overall support for the project, we received a large number of suggestions

We’ve listened, and investigated these suggestions and found that we would be able to achieve the same project objectives with a T2 lane. We are now asking for your feedback on this new proposal.

T2 Lane from Tiverton Road to Maioro Street

We’re proposing to convert one traffic lane from Tiverton Road to Maioro Street to a T2 lane. The transit lane will start after the Tiverton Road/Blockhouse Bay Road intersection, and end shortly before the Maioro Street/Richardson Road intersection.

This T2 lane will apply between the hours of 6.30am to 9.30am, Monday to Friday

During these times, the T2 lane may only be used by buses, motorbikes, mopeds, bicycles, passenger service vehicles, and vehicles with two or more people (including the driver)

This lane will be a normal traffic lane at other times.

New Windsor Road and Maioro Street Intersection Improvements

Intersection upgrades at New Winsdor Road / Maioro Street

Concerns have been raised about red light running and the speed of vehicles going through this intersection, especially before and after school time. We have taken this into consideration, and this design aims to improve safety for children, parents, and the wider school community.

Safety improvements here include raising the intersection onto a speed table and adding a third pedestrian crossing. This will reduce speed and provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safe place to cross.

Safety improvements at this location have received strong community support and were proposed in response to concerns raised by the school and wider community. In response to requests for improved cycling facilities, we have made it safer for cyclists to cross at this intersection.

Maioro Street Safety Improvements

New signalised pedestrian crossing on Maioro Road

New pedestrian crossing on Maioro Street

A new signalised shared crossing is proposed part way between Roseville Street and Rosamund Avenue. This will provide a safe crossing place for bus users, pedestrians, and cyclists who need to cross this busy road. This crossing will also be on a raised table with a low profile to encourage safe and appropriate speeds.

A crossing at this location has received strong support from the community. In response to requests for improved cycling facilities, we have made it safer and easier for cyclists travelling along the shared path to cross the road.

Side street improvements

On the side roads of Cordelia Place, Roseville Street, and Rosamund Avenue, we are planning raised pedestrian friendly speed tables. These tables will also encourage drivers to turn out onto Maioro Street at a safe speed, and to enable people using the shared paths to cross safely.

Benefits and Impacts

Benefits of this project include:

  • A more efficient public transport system with improved bus reliability

  • Reduced travel times for people on buses and in vehicles that can use the T2 lane

  • Improved safety for students crossing the road at the Maioro Street/New Windsor Road intersection

  • A safe place to cross Maioro Street, especially for people who catch the bus

  • Improved pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, making it safer and easier to use the shared path on Maioro Street

Impacts of this project include:

  • Removal of the slip lane at the New Windsor Road and Maioro Street intersection

  • The relocation of several bus stops to ensurclear lines of sight, and adequate room for the bus driver to manoeuvre in and out of the stop

  • The removal of Bus Stop 8299 (in front of 101 Tiverton Road) to optimise the bus stops along this route. Bus passengers will be able to catch the bus from Stop Bus Stop 8297, which is less than 150m down Tiverton Road

Project History

In April to May 2022, we consulted the community about dynamic lanes and safety improvements on Maioro Street. This is how your feedback has influenced our design for a T2 lane:

Your feedback:Our response:

Support for the proposed safety improvements

We have retained these safety elements. We have made small design changes to further improve safety for everyone.

Requests for additional cycling facilitiesDesign changes have been made to the proposed crossings. These changes will make it easier and safer for cyclists using the shared path to cross the road.

Suggestions to introduce a transit lane (T2 or T3) instead of a dynamic lane

We investigated this suggestion and found that a T2 lane would also achieve project objectives

Concern from residents about the removal of the flush median and ability to right turn from side streets during peak hours

We listened and recognised the effect this would have on residents on Maioro Street and its side streets.

We are now proposing a T2 lane. This would retain the median strip on Maioro Street and allow drivers to turn right from the side streets.
