Improving crossing safety outside Te Atatū Intermediate School

About the project

We’re improving crossing safety outside Te Atatū Intermediate School in Te Atatū Peninsula, near the intersection of Harbour View Road and Pringle Road.

This is to address concerns raised by the school about the lack of safer crossing facilities that better protect their tamariki, reduce vehicle speeds, and allow drivers more time to see people who cross the road, especially during busy hours, before and after school.

The changes we’re making:

• Install a new raised zebra crossing outside 8 Harbour View Road to slow drivers on approach and prioritise people crossing, as drivers must stop and wait for them.
• Install “stay put” school patrol poles and signage at the crossing so drivers know they’re near a school and need to slow down.
• Upgrade the existing traffic island to a new crossing island to provide a safer area to wait when crossing the road.
• Upgrade existing pram ramps at all crossing points with tactile pavers. The ramps will make it safer and more convenient for people with mobility needs, those pushing prams or strollers, to navigate crossings more easily. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers to help vision impaired people cross the road safely.
• Widen the footpath and realign the kerbs at the bend of Pringle Road to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
• Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) near Jack Pringle Village Green Park to clear access and ensure visibility near the crossing.
• Install new signs and road markings so drivers know they are approaching a crossing and need to slow down.

• Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs to safely cross the road and access the school and nearby park.
• Ensures everyone in the community can move around the neighbourhood safely, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport, and other local amenities.
• Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
• New road markings and signs clarify right of way. improving safety and ensures compliance with the traffic regulations.

We will install these changes in March/ April 2026.
