Improving walking safety along Te Atatū Road, Te Atatū Peninsula

About this project

We’re improving footpath safety on Te Atatū Road in Te Atatū Peninsula to provide safe, convenient and well-connected walking options in your community.

We’ve received community requests to widen the footpath between #522 and #528 Te Atatū Road to provide more space for pedestrians and improve accessibility. Te Atatū Road is a key arterial road and with a bus stop and several businesses near the footpath, with higher numbers of people walking.

The changes we’re making in 2026

• Widen existing footpath and kerb alignment from 522 to 528 Te Atatū Road. We will need to reshape the grass berms and level the soil.

• Install a new reconfigured bus stop and shelter at Stop #5086 in front of 526 Te Atatū Road.
  

• Repainting road markings and cycle lane to make the existing markings easier for drivers to see.

• Install tactile pavers near the bus stop, which are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired passengers find their way safely.
  

• Reconstruct the driveways of properties #526 and #528. Any work that alters a driveway will be at our cost.

Benefits to the community:

• Wider footpaths make it easier and stress-free for you and local children to move about your community, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
• A bus shelter improves comfort waiting for the bus as it provides people with a place to sit and protection from the wind and rain.
• New road markings and signs will improve and support the bus stop reconfiguration and customer safety.
• Ensure those with mobility needs can navigate on and off a bus more easily.

What happens next

• Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
• We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
• We know this may cause some inconvenience, and we will minimise this as much as possible while balancing safety concerns.
