Safer access to Takaanini Station is coming

Every day, large numbers of people use Takaanini Station for work, school, errands and connecting with whānau.

From next year, even more people will use the station as the City Rail Link will unlock more frequent trains and new connections, making it easier to get around Auckland. Southern Line trains will increase to every five minutes during peak times, and there is the potential for more in the future.

Currently, you have to walk across the tracks to the station platform, this is called a level crossing. To provide safer access to stations, we’re removing or replacing these types of crossings to make way for more trains. Without removing level crossings there would be a higher safety risk and safety gates would be closed more often, impacting travel times.

To replace the current level crossing at Takaanini Station, we will build a new pedestrian bridge to provide safe access to the station platform.

New pedestrian bridge

A new bridge will be built to provide the community with a safer way to access the station and help improve journey times by train.

The new bridge will be fully accessible and is proposed to be built at the same location as the current level crossing to the platform, which maintains easy access to and from the station carpark on the north and Maru Road to the south.

The current crossing that requires people to walk directly on the rail tracks will be permanently closed and replaced with this new, safer, accessible pedestrian bridge.

The proposed design of the pedestrian bridge would make is necessary to remove approximately 19 existing carparks, with 265 carparks retained including the current seven accessibility carparks.

When is this happening?

To make sure we’re ready for the City Rail Link, main construction is expected to begin in December while the rail network shuts down for summer upgrade work. However, we will look to do some initial work from October. As the project timeline progresses, we will continue to keep you updated.

Things we need to consider

While a new pedestrian bridge will make it safer to access Takaanini Station, we need to make sure we consider and address key impacts of the bridge. This includes making sure it is accessible, safe, future-proofed, and it fits with the look and feel of the station. It also needs to easily link up with bus connections.

Taking all of this into account, we’re working on a proposed design that considers:

Consideration

Features

Accessibility

  • Access via lifts and stairs. Lift design standards and rigorous maintenance will ensure reliability
  • Continued access from both sides of the station
  • Dedicated footpath connection within the car parking area for access to lifts
  • Seven dedicated mobility car parks will remain within close access to new footbridge. Although slightly configured.

Parking

  • The proposed design of the pedestrian bridge requires the removal of about 19 existing carparks, with 265 carparks retained including the current seven accessibility carparks.

Safety

  • Improved lighting on bridge and pathways
  • 1.8m fencing around the current crossing area to prevent people from crossing the tracks
  • New dedicated pedestrian crossing within the carparking area (Station Road, side of the station)
  • Extension to the station platform to ensure enough space.

Built for the future

  • Width and design of new footbridge is future proofed for additional tracking of the rail line along this section of the road.

Walking/cycling

  • Stairs built as an alternative to the lift for those walking
  • Bike parking will be retained within the carparking area (Station Road, side of the station)
  • Footpath within the carparking area (Station Road, side of the station) for access to both stairs and lift
  • Footpath tie in on Maru Road to both lift and stairs.

Value for money

  • Balancing limited funding for Auckland’s transport needs with other design considerations.

While a preferred design has been developed, we want to understand from community and stakeholders what this will mean for access, connection, and safety. This will help us finalise the design and determine how the new pedestrian bridge can best be tied into the wider neighbourhood.
