FAQs
Why are you making this change?
Improving cycling links across Waiheke Island and improving cycling facilities are key priorities for the people of Waiheke.
In 2019, AT, the Waiheke Local Board and the wider Waiheke community worked together to create a 10-year plan for Waiheke's transport system. AT and the Waiheke Local Board updated the plan in 2022. Find out more by visiting Waiheke 10 Year Transport Plan.
Why is the project not open to public consultation?
We are moving forward with the project due to existing local board and community interest for these upgrades.
Our team remains open to hearing from the community. If you think we've missed something, please let us know using the Q&A tool or email us atengagement@at.govt.nz
All questions and local insights will be forwarded to our engineering team for their consideration and response.
Why are there cycle lanes and sharrows in the design?
Due to the width of the existing roads, we were unable to install cycle lanes in some areas.
Sharrows are painted on the road to let drivers know they should expect cyclists and to let cyclists know where it is safest to ride on the road.
How will this project be funded?
The project is funded under the Local Board Capital Transport Fund.
Can you reduce the number of parking spaces lost?
Unfortunately, we are unable to further reduce the number of parking spaces lost. To keep cyclists safe, vehicles cannot park on the road where there is a cycleway.
From our observations, very few vehicles currently park along the new cycle route. Furthermore, the roads are also quite narrow, with many sections already painted with broken yellow lines.
However, we appreciate that this change will inconvenience some people. To provide this cycling upgrade, we need to repurpose the on-street parking spaces.
