About the project

Auckland Transport and the Waiheke Local Board are delivering cycling upgrades in Surfdale, Waiheke.

The new upgrades will make it easier and safer for everyone moving around on their bike, whether they’re going to the shops, work, school or visiting friends and whānau.

We are delivering this project in line with the community priorities outlined in the Waiheke 10-year Transport Plan.

The changes we're making

We worked closely with Cycle Action Waiheke to design the best route. The team considered where people prefer to cycle, missing links in the cycle network, and key destinations.

We plan to install a combination of painted cycle lanes and cycle sharrows in Surfdale.

Map of the Surfdale Cycling Improvements

The upgrades will start at the Ocean View Road, Pacific Parade, and Surfdale Road intersection ending at the Alison Road and Donald Bruce Road roundabout.

Along Surfdale Road we will paint cycleways on both sides of the road.

On Hamilton Road, Miami Avenue and Mitchell Road, we are painting a mixture of cycle lanes on one side of the road and cycle sharrows on the other side due to the narrow width of these roads. A cycle sharrow, or "share arrow", is a green rectangle with white arrows and bicycle. These are painted on narrow roads, particularly those with road side parking, to encourage cyclists to travel where it is safest.

Example of sharrows in Oneroa

On Alison Road we are painting a cycle lane on the northern side of the road only.

To make room for the cycleway upgrades, we need to repurpose space on the road. This project will result in the loss of approximately 40 on-street parking spaces.

Benefits to your community

These changes:

  • Support a healthier, cheaper, and more sustainable way to move around Waiheke Island.
  • Provide dedicated spaces for people to cycle on the road.
  • Make it safer for children cycling to and from school.
  • Improving the cycling experience between Oneroa, Surfdale, and Ostend.

What happens next

We plan to install these changes in March 2025. To minimise impact on the community, we will deliver this project at the same time as our routine road maintenance works.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
