Streets for People - Onewherowhero (Kelston)

Project Update

The Streets for People Onewherowhero consultation officially closed on 14 April 2024.

Thank you to the Kelston school community and various organisations who took part in this project, from the early planning and design stage leading to the trial phase where everyone got to have their say on the changes needed around the streets of Kelston.

Trial Outcome

After hearing from the community, we are pleased to update that the on-street changes we have installed along St Leonards Road and outside Kelston Girls’ College are working as planned.

Through the online survey and conversations at various events with schools, businesses, organisations, and other community members, we’ve received mostly positive feedback.

The positive feedback we heard:

• Students now feel safer when walking to and from school
• School crossings are easier to manage before and after school
• Fewer reports of students being nearly hit by motorists

We will consider how to best retain the benefits of the trial through more permanent changes in future projects.

Trial changes remaining

Planter boxes and flexi-posts to encourage slower speeds and increase safety for students who walk and cycle to school

Pedestrian island to improve the safety for people crossing the top of Vanguard Road.

Reinforced no parking areas to make it easier to see people especially school children crossing the road

Rubber wheel stops in front of St Leonards shops to stop cars from driving onto footpath

Speed cushions to slow speeds and improve safety for people crossing

We have removed the pop-up community corner as we are near the end of the trial. It has been a fantastic spot for people to learn about the trial, view artwork from local schools, and get a free bike fix on Tuesdays.

The pop-up bike repairs will continue at the same spot (the corner of St Leonards Road and Bamboo Grove) Tuesdays 3pm to 6pm until 30 July.

The temporary pump track at Archibald Park is intended to stay in place until February 2025 with a review in August 2024. After leaving Archibald park, the pump track will move to another location, similar to the Panuku pump track.

Project Overview

During the summer holidays, we installed temporary changes to the street along St Leonards Road and outside Kelston Girls’ College.

These changes have been shaped by the ideas and insights of your local school community. Over the past few months, we've worked alongside teachers, parents, and students from Kelston's schools to find out how they thought we could improve the streets around them.

Trialling these changes allows the whole community to experience them and have their say. Compared to traditional transport projects, the changes are low-cost and low-risk. This allows our project team to better understand the wants and needs of the local community before making any permanent changes.
