Construction starting April school holidays

We’re installing a new raised zebra crossing, traffic islands and improving the footpath on St Andrews Road in Epsom to improve safety. Works will take place over the weekend from 7pm on Friday 10 to 5am on Monday 13 April (dependent on good, dry weather).

For more information about construction click here for the works notification letter.

About the project

Albert-Eden local board identified this area for improvements. On their behalf, we proposed improving pedestrian safety at the intersection of St Andrews Road and Balmoral Road, Epsom.

This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work. The improvements will be delivered by Auckland Transport on behalf of your local board.

What we proposed in April 2025:

  • Upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing facilities – footpath widening, crosswalk widening and install new pedestrian push buttons.
  • Install new tactile pavers at each crossing facility. These are yellow guidance paving markers to help pedestrians find their way to crossings and safely across roads.
  • Shorten traffic islands to widen the crosswalk lines on the road.

Benefits and impacts

These changes would:

  • Improve safety and amenities for pedestrians, especially tamariki crossing the road.
  • Improve visibility between motorists and people waiting to cross the road.

Community Feedback from the April 2025 engagement

We noticed a common theme from the feedback you provided regarding the footpath on each side of the intersection. We listened to all your suggestions and AT will work with you to find the best solutions for the community.

Here are our responses to a summary of your comments, suggestions, and questions:

Footpath:

Suggestion to spend money on fixing the footpaths that are uneven, narrow and encroaching on the grass.

  • Suggestion to install tactile pavers for those who are visually impaired.
  • Suggestion to build better footpaths along Greenlane West and Balmoral Road.

This project is requested and funded by the Albert-Eden Local Board. It aims to improve pedestrian facilities at all corners of the traffic light intersection, including:

  • Upgrading footpaths
  • New warning signs and directional tactile pavers
  • Widening pedestrian crossings

  • Suggestion to improve the footpath access to the intersection. The footpath near the existing bus shelter heading east on the northern side of Balmoral Road sits lower than the surrounding grass area.

As the funding for this project is limited, footpath works at the bus shelter further down Balmoral Road are unfortunately not included as they are considered outside this scope of works. AT will investigate this further for you. Please quote reference number CAS-1086405-V0J8R0 when you contact us if you wish to follow up on this request.

Cycle Lane:

Suggestion to build a cycle lane along Greenlane that is protected and wide enough for bikes.

This is a Local Board requested and funded project. The aim of the project is to upgrade the existing kerb ramps, pedestrian crossing and the tactile pavers as they no longer meet AT standards. Installation of cycle facilities are considered outside the scope of this pedestrian improvement project.

AT will investigate this further for you. Please quote reference number CAS-1086447-Y3L1C8 when you contact us if you wish to follow up on this request.

Miscellaneous:

Concerned the cost to shorten the traffic islands is unnecessary as the crosswalk lines are wide enough for the pedestrian volume.

This project is funded and requested by the Local Board. The goal is to make it safer and easier for pedestrians by upgrading the kerb ramps, pedestrian crossing and tactile pavers, which are currently not up to AT standards. To do this, we need to shorten the traffic islands slightly to fit these improvements, providing better pedestrian facilities and increased safety.
