Improving safety and accessibility on Spur Road, Stillwater

About the project

We’re making improvements to the school bus stop on Spur Road in response to community concerns about safety and access for school children.

The bus stop is only used by school buses.

Spur Road is busy at peak times, with vehicles stopping and turning, and people walking, cycling and scootering through the area. This can make it unsafe for tamariki waiting for the school bus.

Thanks to the Hibiscus Coast & Bays Local Board Transport Capital Fund, these changes will make the school bus stop safer, easier to use and more comfortable.

The changes we’re making by March-April 2026

• Move the existing school bus stop near 11 Spur Road to outside 2 Spur Road, closer to East Coast Road, so it’s easier to see and safer to access.
• Install a repurposed bus shelter outside 2 Spur Road, providing somewhere to sit and better protection from the weather for passengers.
• Reinstate three parking spaces as part of the new layout
• Build a new concrete waiting area so tamariki have a flat, stable surface to wait and to get on and off the bus safely
• Trim trees and vegetation to improve visibility and access around the bus stop.
• Paint “No stopping” lines, and bus entry and exit markings to improve visibility and allow buses to enter and leave the stop safely. This also makes it easier for people to get on and off the bus
• Install tactile pavers near the new stop, which are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired passengers move safely around the bus stop.
• Install new signs and clear road markings to support safe use of the school bus stop

• Safer, more comfortable bus waiting area for school children , with a shelter and a proper standing surface where none currently exists.
• Improved accessibility and connections to the local School bus and support safer travel for children in the Stillwater community
• Improved visibility and safety helping drivers, buses and people on foot move safely.
• New road markings and signs will improve and support the bus stop relocations and customer safety. This is only a school bus stop
  

What Happens Next:

• We will contact residents and businesses before any work begins.
• Any updates to the plan will be posted on our website.
• Painting the road markings will take one day in good weather conditions.
• We understand this may cause some inconvenience and will minimize disruption while prioritizing safety.
• Please Park courteously and avoid blocking driveways. Vehicles parked illegally may receive infringement notices or be towed.
