About the project

We’re making cycling safer on Shakespeare Road, between North Shore Hospital Drive and Taharoto Road in Takapuna.

The Devonport–Takapuna Local Board asked for safety improvements in this area, so we’re responding by making it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle. These changes will help everyone get around in a more reliable and eco-friendly way.

Takapuna’s population is growing so we’re working on a safe walking and cycling network in your community, so everyone gets where they need to and home safely!

The changes we're making

  1. New continuous shared path along the southern side of Shakespeare Rd – between North Shore Hospital Dr and Taharoto Rd.
  2. New cycle kerb ramps on #142 Shakespeare Rd (near Shakespeare Rd– Taharoto Rd intersection) and #211 Shakespeare Rd (near Shakespeare Rd– North Shore Hospital Dr intersection).
  3. New/adjusted road markings for the new shared path on Shakespeare Rd and the existing shared path on Wairau Rd.
  4. Upgrade the existing traffic light-controlled crossings to traffic light-controlled shared walking and cycling crossings at the intersections of Shakespeare Rd–North Shore Hospital Dr and Shakespeare Rd– Taharoto Rd–Wairau Rd.
  5. Upgrade the existing crossings in the free turn (slip lanes) to shared walking and cycling crossings at the intersection of Shakespeare Rd–Taharoto Rd–Wairau Rd
  6. Extend the existing bike path detour (cycle bypass) from #5 Wairau Rd to #3 Wairau Rd so cyclists go around the bus stop and merge with the shared path

Benefits to your community

  • More travel choices around Takapuna by foot, bike, or scooter that is good for you, your whānau and the environment.
  • Better connections to existing links to shared paths, cycleways and public transport.
  • Improves your health and well‑being to enjoy the outdoors in your neighbourhood.
  • Safer footpaths and cycleways mean people walking and cycling are separated from traffic and gives tamariki confidence to bike and walk to school.
  • Easier access to local shops, schools, and businesses, boosting the local economy.
  • Inclusive design helps everyone – elderly, children, and those with disabilities – get around.

What happens next

We will install these changes in early 2026

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
