Selwyn Road and Pah Road Intersection Improvement

What we are doing
We are working to make it easier and safer for you to access the intersection of Selwyn Road and Pah Road in Epsom. The proposed signalised intersection will make it clearer and safer for people to move through the intersection, whether you are walking, cycling, driving, living nearby, working or visiting the area.
What we are proposing
We are proposing the following safety upgrades at the Selwyn Road and Pah Road intersection:
- Install traffic lights and create new pedestrian crossings on the north leg of Pah Road and Selwyn Road.
- Reconstruct the footpath with new berm.
- Reconstruction of vehicle crossing outside 35 Pah Road to align with new kerb line.
- Install broken yellow lines (No Stopping At All Times) to support these safety improvements. As a result, overall, 6 parking spaces will be removed. This includes the following changes:
- Remove 4 roadside parking spaces on Selwyn Road
- Remove 2 off-peak parking spaces on Pah Road – Kerbside parking permitted within the transit lane outside of peak operational hours (Mon-Fri, 7-10 AM & 4-7 PM).
To maintain traffic flow at the intersection and Pah Road, we are proposing to restrict southbound right turns from Pah Road into Selwyn Road.
Our investigations indicate that the number of vehicles making this turn is relatively low. As Pah Road is classified as an arterial road and forms part of the frequent public transport network, maintaining its capacity is important. Alternative routes are available via Pukehana Avenue or Orakau Avenue.

These improvements will help make the intersection safer and more predictable for everyone using the area. Key benefits include:
- Better traffic flow for vehicles to move through the area

Why we doing this
Improving safety
- 11 crashes were reported between 2020 and 2024, including four minor-injury crashes.
- 3 vulnerable road users have involved in the 4 injury-related crashes, including 2 motorcyclists and 1 cyclist.
Making the intersection safer for everyone
- Our investigation identified all of these crashes involved vehicles turning out from Selwyn Road and failing to give way to through traffic on Pah Road, highlighting the existing turning risks.
- The proposed improvements will reduce crash risk and make the area safer, more accessible and better connected.

What happens next
We will consider all community feedback and present a recommendation and feedback report to Albert-Eden and Puketāpapa Local Board. Albert-Eden and Puketāpapa Local Board will provide feedback prior to a final decision being made.
