Update 12 June 2026 - Sandspit stairs design community feedback required

As part of this work, we're seeking feedback on a proposed stair design at the wharfhead. The repair work for the wharf will be like-for-like with minor material changes to increase longevity.

Instead of replacing the existing large staircase, we propose two separate sets of stairs with a central handrail, removing the existing inner section of stairs. This design provides a practical and durable path making it cost-effective and easier to maintain, while maintaining safe access for wharf users.

At the drop-in session on Thursday 4 June, we shared the proposed stair design with the community and asked for feedback. Based on what we heard from people who came along, the stairs are likely to be 1650mm wide, which matches similar stairs at the wharf.

We’d also like to hear from anyone who couldn’t make it to the drop-in session, so we’re giving the community some time to share feedback on the proposed stair design. Please email us at ATengagement@at.govt.nz (ref: Sandspit Wharf stair design) or leave a comment at the bottom of this page by Wednesday 24 June 2026.

About the project

Auckland Transport is planning repair works at Sandspit Wharf following inspections that identified deterioration in several under wharf elements such as piles and braces. To help keep people safe and protect the structure, temporary restrictions have been put in place while the repair plan is finalised. Repair works are currently expected to commence over winter subject to weather, final scope, and material availability. Some of the materials are proving difficult to source with long lead times so it may be that these works have to be completed in multiple stages.

Previous repair work

Some maintenance and renewal works were completed in 2022. These works consisted of replacing four sets of stairs, installing two new sets of piles and bearers, replacing some braces, adding additional joist support, and grouting some piles. The piles were grouted to extend their lifespan, while others were in better condition. These piles have deteriorated more quickly than expected, especially in the past 18 months since the last detailed condition assessment. The piles can no longer be grouted, and numerous elements are now at end of life and require replacement. The design and project approach is currently looking at fully rebuilding the worse wing on the wharf head and a significant number of components surrounding this to try remove the need to have to go back to the wharf in the next 2-5 years and replace more items that are currently in moderate condition.

What you need to know

  • Sandspit Wharf needs repair work to address deterioration in some of its piles and structural elements.
  • Temporary vehicle restrictions are in place on a section of the wharf, to protect the wharf while repairs are planned.
  • Pedestrian access continues, and ferry services are still operating.
  • Repair works is currently expected to begin in July and may be carried out in stages, due to material availability.
  • The aim of the works is to keep the wharf safe and operational for the community.
  • Auckland Transport will provide updates before works begin and during construction if anything changes.

What happens next

  • We will contact residents and businesses before any work begins.
  • Any updates to the plan will be posted on our website.
  • We understand this may cause some inconvenience and will minimise disruption while prioritising safety.
