Improving crossing accessibility near Crimson AGE School, Takapuna

About the Project

We’re responding to a request by Crimson AGE School and the community to improve accessibility and safety when crossing the road near the intersection of Sanders Avenue and Lake Road, Takapuna.

Lake Road is a busy street with lots of cars, buses, and people moving through the area, especially during school pick-up and drop-off times. At the intersection of Sanders Ave, there is currently no formal crossing, which can make it hard for tamariki, the elderly, and people with prams or mobility needs to cross the road here. We need to improve the crossing points on either side of the footpath to ensure safety and accessibility for everyone.

The Changes we're making

• Extending the footpath and kerb outside property #404 Lake Road, Takapuna, to reduce crossing distance, give more room for people to wait to cross, and slow the exit speed of motorists out of Sanders Ave onto Lake Road.
• Widening the footpath at the crossing point of Sanders Ave and Lake Road outside Crimson AGE School, to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
• Installing new pram crossings with yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points of Sanders Avenue and Lake Road. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers that help vision-impaired people cross the road.
• Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) near the exit of Sanders Ave onto Lake Road, to clear access and help with visibility of people crossing here.
• Install new signs and lighting to support these changes.

Benefits to your community

• Ensures everyone in the community can move around the neighbourhood safely, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport, and other local amenities.
• Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to crossroads. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
• Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot.  Widening the footpath gives more room for people to wait to cross.
• New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
• Walking and cycling are good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

What happens next

We will install these changes by February/March 2026
