About this project

As part of our road safety programme, we’re responding to safety concerns along Matakana Road, between Clayden Road to Green Road, to make it safer for everyone who uses the road.

This area has been identified as high-risk for crashes. The proposed safety upgrades along the corridor aim to reduce the likelihood of loss of control, intersection, and head on crashes.

The changes we are making by June 2026

  • Install a new flush median and painted at the intersection of Matakana Road - Sharp Road to help guide traffic safely
  • Widen the road shoulders, add new kerb and drainage, and install clearer STOP signs and markings near Oak River Drive.
  • Widen the road shoulders and install a new kerb opposite #789 Matakana Road.
  • Add wider centre lines between #789 Matakana Road and near the Matakana Road - Wright Road intersection to separate traffic more clearly.
  • Widen the road shoulders, install a new kerb, and improve drainage near #822 Matakana Road.
  • Add new high friction surfacing, wider shoulders, a new kerb, and clearer markings at the Matakana - Wright Road intersection.
  • Add wider centre lines and shoulders between #850 and #877 Matakana Road.
  • Install a new kerb, side traffic islands, and threshold road markings near #877 Matakana Road, to remind drivers they are entering a lower-speed area.

A drawing showing the changes can be downloaded from the right-side panel on this page.

Benefits to your community:

  • Safer journeys – These improvements will help reduce the risk of crashes and make the road safer for everyone.
  • Better visibility and guidance – Clearer signs and road markings make it easier for drivers to see and understand the road layout.
  • Encourages safer speeds – Wider shoulders and new markings encourage drivers to slow down and take extra care.
  • Improved driver awareness – The upgrades help drivers stay alert when entering or travelling through this high-risk area.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.

How to contact us:

If you’d like to discuss our plans, share what you know about your area or let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a comment on our website by 14 December 2025.
