About the project
We’re making Red Hills Road safer by adding new safety measures for people driving through Massey West.
Our investigations show that extra improvements are needed to warn drivers about the bends and give better visibility along this winding rural road. It will reduce the likelihood of a crash on rural road and ensure everyone gets where they need to and home safely.
The changes we’re making:
Install skid-resistant surfacing on the sharp bend (between 83–56 Red Hills Road) to reduce speeds, minimise the risk of accidents and improve vehicle grip especially during wet weather conditions.
Paint a solid, wide centreline (between 205–85 Red Hills Road) to clearly separate traffic lanes, especially around bends.
Install an electronic curve warning sign near 83 Red Hills Road to alert drivers in the high-crash zone.
Install reflective raised pavements markers (red and white cat’s eyes) along the centreline and road edges, and new reflective edge markers, to make lanes easier to see at night.
Install additional advisory signs like advance speed and curve warning signs to help drivers manage their speeds and travel through the tight curve safely.
Benefits to your community:
Safer journeys – Reduces crash risk and makes the road safer for everyone.
Clearer signage – Helps drivers navigate the area confidently and safely.
Greater driver awareness – Encourages slower speeds and extra care at high-risk bends.
Improved markings and signs – Minimise the risk of loss-of-control crashes.
What happens next
We will install these changes in the first half of 2026.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
We will in touch with local residents and businesses before any work takes place.
