Engagement Outcome

Thank you to those who reached out and shared their insights about our plan.

The engagement for this project has now closed. We will proceed with the project as planned.

What the community said about the project

  • "Thank you - this will make a difference, as you cannot always see the students who are coming up to the crossing when they are walking on the footpath behind the parked cars. This will give more time for the drivers to notice to give way."

We received a small number of submissions from the community. These are summarized below, along with our responses:

  • Suggestion to increase enforcement during school peak hours to avoid illegal parking

Our response

We understand your concerns about people parking on the broken yellow lines, especially outside the schools, and the safety risks this creates for students. We will pass this on to our parking enforcement team so they can increase checks in the area, particularly before and after school, to help improve safety.

  • Suggestion to install low planter boxes near crossings to physically prevent parking while maintaining visibility

Our response

While we understand your suggestion to install planter boxes to stop people from parking, we avoid placing fixed objects on the road unless they can be safely accommodated within the road environment, as they may create additional safety risks.

What happens next

  • We are looking at installing these changes at the end of August 2026.
  • We will contact residents and businesses before any work begins. Painting the road markings will take one day in good weather conditions.
  • Any updates to the plan will be posted on our website.

About the project

There are two busy pedestrian crossings on Rathgar Road in Henderson, one near St Dominic’s Girls Catholic School and another near Liston College. These crossings are used a lot, especially before and after school.

We’ve heard concerns that parked vehicles close to the crossings can make it difficult for drivers to see people who are waiting to cross, particularly students.

The changes we’re making

To improve visibility and safety, we’ll be installing “no stopping at all times” markings (broken yellow lines) near each crossing. These changes will prevent parked vehicles from blocking the view of drivers and make it safer and easier for people, especially students, to cross the road.

Benefits to your community

  • Improves visibility for drivers to see students who cross the road
  • Enhances safety for people, especially students, who cross the road
