Residents have told us about ongoing safety concerns relating to bus parking on Rankin Avenue resulting in visibility and driveway access issues for residents and motorists.
To respond to these concerns, we’re creating more bus parking and break stops on Margan Avenue and changing the road layout to improve safety and access for residents.
The changes we’re making
Shortening the current bus parking area on Rankin Avenue
Installing three new bus break stops and a restroom (Exeloo) for bus drivers on Margan Avenue (on the reserve side of the road where they will not obstruct driveways)
Painting yellow ‘no stopping at all times’ lines at the bus stops on both streets, to improve bus movement and visibility for residents exiting their driveways
Updating signs and road markings to reflect the new layout
Adding two traffic islands on Rankin Avenue and two on Margan Avenue for better road safety
Impacts of the changes
We need to paint additional broken yellow lines on Margan Avenue (outside the reserve) to clear access for the new bus break stops
New signs, markings, and infrastructure will support the safer updated layout
Less congestion and noise from buses on Rankin Avenue, as they will tend to relocate to Margan Avenue for breaks
Timeline
Rankin Avenue: Work begins first to address immediate safety issues
Margan Avenue: Work follows later in 2025, depending on funding availability
This work is separate from current footpath upgrades on Margan Avenue
Please refer to the drawings attached to see where these changes apply
Background
Since the 2017 West Auckland bus network changes, residents on and near Rankin Avenue have experienced issues with buses parking in positions that block driveways and reduce visibility.
The Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 also requires bus drivers to have regular rest breaks and access to toilet facilities. These changes will help ensure those needs are met without affecting residential safety or access.
Benefits to your community
Safer driveway access and improved visibility
Better facilities for bus drivers, supporting safe and respectful operations
To accommodate growth in bus frequency and the requirement for more bus break stops in the area
