About the Project

We’re making changes along Margan and Rankin Avenues in New Lynn to provide safe, convenient, and well-connected walking options to the community.

This area was chosen because we heard from the community that safer walking routes are needed, especially to get to local parks, shops, schools, and public transport. These upgrades will help support more people to walk, bus, or bike instead of driving.

This project is funded through the Auckland Council Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR), which supports low-emission and safer transport options across Tāmaki Makaurarau Auckland.

The changes we’re making

  • Install a new traffic light-controlled crossing near 40 Rankin Avenue, to give priority to those who cross the road, whether on foot or by bike.
  • Install a new footpath and kerbs, including reinstating the grass berm on the northern side of Margan Avenue from outside property #42 Wharetana Crescent along the Margan Reserve to property #48 Margan Avenue. This will give people more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
  • Install pram crossings, making it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensuring those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
  • Install new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help visually impaired people safely cross the road.
  • Install new signs and paint new road markings so motorists know they are approaching a traffic-light-controlled crossing.

In addition to this, earlier this year, we let you know we’ll be doing work to improve safety and bus parking in the same area, which includes:

Benefits to your community

  • Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs and speed reduction near various facilities and shops on Rankin Avenue.
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
  • There would be a low impact on traffic flow as the crossing is only activated when someone pushes the button.
  • Improves visibility for drivers to see oncoming cars, people walking, cycling, and crossing the road.
  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot. Widening the footpath gives more room for people to wait to cross.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to parks, public transport.
  • Walking and cycling are good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next

We will install these changes by November/December 2025

Any change to the plan will be updated on our website

We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place
