Porritt Ave bus stop improvements
AT is proposing to re-investigate bus and safety improvements on Porritt Avenue, Chatswood. An initial proposal in July 2021 was put on hold while we considered local feedback, however over the intervening years our bus operators continue to highlight safety concerns, reporting near-misses and difficulty navigating this street. It is important that we address this to prevent accidents and keep the community safe. It will also enable our services to run smoothly and efficiently and provide more reliable journeys for passengers.
Why we are proposing these changes
Bus drivers find Porritt Ave difficult to navigate because parked cars force them into the middle of the road. This regularly brings them nose-to-nose with oncoming vehicles, including other buses, and can require drivers to reverse to allow traffic to pass.
About the Porritt Ave bus service
The 931 bus route connects the North Shore to the city centre and the University of Auckland. It is a Monday to Friday only service and does not run on the weekends. During the week, an average of 121 people a day catch this bus into the city and an average of 95 people a day alight the bus on Porritt Avenue.
Because the bus stops are in use on weekdays only, we are proposing an Auckland-first of allowing residents to park in the bus stops when the bus is not in service (Monday to Friday 8pm-6am and 24/7 during weekends.
Project approach
This project focuses on low-cost, high-impact changes that improve public transport reliability for passengers and increase the safety of all vehicles on Porritt Avenue.
What we are proposing
Rationalising and optimising bus stop locations: reducing four bus stop pairs to three. This reduces travel time for passengers and improves schedule reliability. It also returns 9 permanent parking spaces to the road.
New bus stop pairs are proposed at:
19 and 30 Porritt Avenue
80 and 87 Porritt Avenue
125 and 126 Porritt Avenue
At the new locations we will need to remove six trees; however these have been assessed by arborists as in poor condition. Six replacement trees will be planted in other areas along Porritt Avenue, as approved by council
The new stops will be in line with the latest standards and include tactile pavers and Broken Yellow Lines (BYL’s) at either end to ensure buses can pull in and out of stops safely and easily.
Installing BYL’s at the intersections of Heaton Grove and Calman Place to provide better visibility for exiting vehicles, and ensure cars do not park illegally on corners.
Installing new BYL’s to reinforce parking rules and improve safety at key locations (i.e. ensure people aren’t parking on corners and hills), removing 6 parking spaces
Allowing residents to park their cars in the bus stops outside of bus service hours (8pm-6am on weekdays and 24/7 on the weekends). This will reduce car parking space on Porritt Ave and result in loss of 21 spaces on Monday to Friday only from 6am-8pm. This will be an Auckland-first arrangement to enable parking in these stops. It is also in response to previous engagement in 2021 where residents requested more car parking
These changes are relatively quick, easy and low cost to implement, mostly involving updating road markings.

What happens next
We will consider all community feedback and present a recommendation report to the Kaipātiki Local Board. The Kaipātiki Local Board will provide feedback prior to a final decision being made.
