About the project
In response to community concerns of speeding drivers and pedestrian safety, we are proposing to install a raised crossing and traffic islands on Riverton Road.
The raised crossing will reduce driver speeds entering and exiting at the intersection with Porchester Road, while making it safer for people to get to the local schools, shops and bus stops.
When deciding location of the crossing point, we considered the distance needed for motorists to see. The area needs to be clear of cars, trees or any other objects that might block the view of the pedestrians.
We are also improving the layout of bus stops on Porchester Road to ensure there is enough space for visibility and bus use.
What we are proposing
We are proposing to build a raised safety platform and install traffic islands on Riverton Drive
Porchester Road and Riverton Drive Drawing
The changes in the proposal include:
Building a new raised safety platform on Riverton Road to reduce entry and exit speeds at the intersection with Porchester Road.
Installing tactile pavers at all road crossing points. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance paving markers which help people find their way to crossings and safely across roads.
Installing signs and paint new road markings.
Adding broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to improve visibility and ensure parked cars do not block the crossing point on Riverton Drive and the bus stops on Porchester Road.
These improvements would remove 26 on-street parking spaces on Porchester Drive by the bus stops and the intersection and 10 on-street parking spaces on Riverton Drive to ensure visibility and safety of the crossing. We understand removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible, whilst also improving the safety of the raised safety platform.
Benefits and impacts
This project aims to improve safety and visibility
We want to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. These changes would:
Improve safety for pedestrians, especially tamariki crossing the road.
Improve visibility between motorists and people waiting to cross the road.
Slow motorists to a safer speed at the crossing point and discourage unsafe driving at the intersection.
Make it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
Keeping bus stop surroundings clear to enable safe stopping for buses
What we want your feedback on
We are seeking feedback from nearby residents and businesses on our proposal to build a new raised safety platform at the intersection of Porchestor Road and Riverton Drive, Randwick Park.
How you can have your say
Have your say by completing the online feedback form. The form will be open from 19 November 2024 to 3 December 2024.
