About the project
We’ve heard concerns from Glendene residents regarding safety at the intersection of Phelps Place and Hepburn Road. In response to these concerns, we're proposing some improvements that will make walking and driving at the intersection safer for everyone.
What we are proposing
Our proposed upgrades to the intersection include:
Upgrading the existing crossing island at Phelps Place to a raised zebra crossing. We will need to adjust the kerb layout at the shopping centre to give more room for this and remove two parking spaces (2 spaces on the Phelps Place side and 1 space on the Hepburn Road side).
Installing a new crossing island and kerb ramps on the southwestern side of Hepburn Road
Installing a new mountable roundabout at the intersection for smoother flow of traffic
Yellow tactile pavers for the visually impaired
New footpath extensions, road signs and markings to support the new crossings and roundabout. We will need to do some work on the driveway in front of 79 Hepburn Rd to extend the footpath leading into the new roundabout.
The safety improvements to the intersection will bring the following benefits:
People on foot will have more travel choices and safer crossing facilities. Creating new extended footpaths means more room to wait to cross.
Drivers will be encouraged to take extra care and slow down when approaching the intersection.
Raising the zebra crossing so it's level with the footpath ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists.
Drivers will have better visibility of people crossing and of their general surroundings at the intersection.
A roundabout will improve traffic flow and lower the risk of turn-based crashes.
Makes it easier to get around and enjoy your neighbourhood safely.
New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
