Consultation has concluded

Howick Local Board identified Paparoa Road as an area for improvements. In response to requests received by the Howick Local Board, Auckland Transport are proposing to relocate and upgrade the current zebra crossing on Paparoa Road.

This will promote safer speeds in the community, raising pedestrians, especially children crossing the road, to be at eye-level of approaching motorists, making them easier to see.

The raised crossing will also make it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.

In July Auckland Transport asked the local community for their feedback on this proposal, and here is what they had to say.

Consultation outcome

We received 13 pieces of feedback on the Paparoa Road, Cockle Bay – Raised pedestrian crossing proposals. Submitters were able to provide feedback regarding their opinions of the proposed changes, if it would benefit their community, and if they had any other suggestions to improve the project.

After carefully considering all the feedback, we’re proceeding with the work as proposed.

What happens next

We anticipate delivering these changes in early 2025. We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place.

The work will include

  • Improve the existing zebra crossing by slightly shifting the existing crossing to a safer more appropriate location outside number 47 Paparoa Road. The current crossing leads pedestrians onto a corner of a kerb and road. By shifting the crossing, pedestrians particularly school children will have a safer place to wait and cross, and drivers turning from Paparoa Road into Bledisloe Road can do more safely too.
  • Install the zebra crossing on top of a speed hump, raised to the height of the footpath. The speed hump is flat and wide with a long off-ramp, which makes it more comfortable for larger vehicles and their passengers.
  • Install tactile pavers (yellow guidance paving markers) to help people find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Install new signs and beacon lights on the raised zebra crossing.
  • Remove one car park on Bledisloe Street to accommodate broken yellow lines that are necessary to improve visibility and safety of the intersection.
  • Relocate six car parks on Paparoa Road to accommodate the relocated crossing and the broken yellow lines that are necessary to improve the visibility and safety of the intersection. These car parks will be reinstated by removing the redundant bus stop no longer in use adjacent to the cemetery entrance.
