Making the Papakura-Clevedon Road and Clevedon Road intersection safer for all road users!

This project is part of Auckland Transport's High-Risk Intersection Programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections in Auckland.

Between 2019 and 2023, 16 crashes were recorded, with nine resulting in minor injuries. Notably, 63% of these crashes involved crossing or turning. Although no fatal or serious crashes have occurred, the nature of these high-risk crash types, combined with increasing traffic and heavy vehicle volumes, underscores the need for safety enhancements.

We are Proposing the following safety improvements at the intersection:

The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection. It is also expected to improve safety and amenities for pedestrians in the area. The proposed treatment includes:

  • Installing a signalised intersection with new pedestrian crossings on each approach.
  • Widening the footpath where possible and required.
  • Introducing new road markings and signage to support the signalisation, including traffic lane markings and no-stopping-at-all-times (broken yellow lines), etc.
  • Kerb realignment and Improved cycling facilities.

Benefits and Impacts

  • Signalising the intersection controls all movements and manages the traffic flow, while prioritising safe crossings for pedestrians.
  • Safer pedestrian crossing facilities will make it easier and more enjoyable for you, our Tamariki, and the community to navigate your neighbourhood with confidence.
  • Improved line marking at the intersection provides a safer waiting location for people on bikes
  • Parking changes will involve reprioritising 16 parking spaces on all four legs of the intersection and painting broken yellow lines to provide queuing spaces for vehicles, ensuring that pedestrians crossing the road can see approaching vehicles clearly.
