Othello Drive & Boundary Road Intersection Improvement
Consultation has concluded
Consultation Outcome
Community engagement was carried out between Monday 10 February to Monday 24 February 2025.
After reviewing the feedback received, we are proceeding with our proposal to upgrade the Othello Drive and Boundary Road intersection to a roundabout with improvements for pedestrian and cyclist safety.
What happens next
The proposal will move to the detailed design stage.
We anticipate construction will start from May 2025.
We'll be in touch with residents before any changes take place.
Community Feedback:
The feedback we received was in support of the project and its benefit to the neighbourhood.
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.
Below are some of the comments in support:
"The proposal will force people to slow down when driving on Boundary Road, particularly at the intersection of Othello Drive. School children will be able to cross the road safely."
"Allows for safer driving and for more student/learner drivers to make safe decisions on the road."
"Boundary Road is a busy road, and I’ve seen drivers from Othello rush out to beat the Boundary Road traffic. I think it would slow down traffic, and force people to wait and not push. Those crash stats aren’t great, I support this change."
"Safer for the kids crossing between boundary road & Othello drive. No one knows how to give way properly with the current intersection."
Feedback Summary and themes:
How would the proposal benefit your neighbourhood
Improved safety for pedestrians and drivers
Many comments highlight the proposal's potential to enhance safety for both pedestrians and drivers. This includes safer crossings for school children, reduced accidents, and better driving behaviour.
Traffic management
Several comments mention the proposal's impact on traffic flow, particularly during peak hours. The proposal is expected to reduce traffic congestion on the two approaches from Othello Drive and make it easier and safer for drivers to navigate the intersection.
Support for traffic calming measures
There is support for the use of vertical traffic calming measures such as raised tables and speed cushions. These measures are expected to improve road safety and make walking and cycling more pleasant.
Community benefits
The proposal is seen as beneficial for the neighbourhood and community, providing a safer and more pleasant environment for residents.
About the project
Road safety improvement at Othello Drive & Boundary Road Intersection
In December 2019, we consulted the community and changed the give way-control to stop-control intersection to improve road safety at Othello Drive/Boundary Road intersection.
During the consultation, many people suggested providing better pedestrian crossings facilities and ways to reduce vehicle speed.
Based on community feedback and safety issues identified, we propose upgrading the intersection to a roundabout with pedestrian/cyclist crossings to provide a safer intersection for all and improve overall road safety in the neighbourhood.
The Othello Drive/ Boundary Road intersection has been identified as one of the high-risk intersections based on recorded crash history. From 2019 to 2023, there were twelve crashes at the intersection, including one serious and eight minor injuries. The crash trend involves crossing/turning type crashes at the existing stop-controlled crossroad intersection.
We expect these changes will improve overall road safety and benefit all road users.
We would appreciate your feedback on the proposed changes.
What we are proposing
We are propose to upgrade the Othello Drive & Boundary Road intersection to a roundabout.
We are proposing the following improvements:
- Install a fully mountable roundabout at the stop-controlled intersection.
- Build a pair of raised pedestrian crossings on Boundary Road and another pair of level crossings (at-grade) with speed cushions on Othello Drive.
- Provide soft-separated footpath/cycle path linking to the crossings.
- Provide cycle on/off ramps at Boundary Road.
- Adjust the kerb lines at the corners for better vehicle tracking.
- Shorten the school bus stop outside No. 84 Boundary Road.
- Install yellow tactile at the footpath/crossings to help visually impaired people to cross safely.
- Install green/yellow tactile pavers for easy identification of cycle lanes or designated walking paths.
- Upgrade streetlights to improve visibility at the crossing.
- Remove four parking spaces on Othello Drive and three on Boundary Road to support the improvement plan.
Benefits
- Improved traffic flow, reduced delays, and enhanced safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
- Increase drivers' awareness to slow down and control their speed on approach.
- Roundabout increases road safety by reducing conflict points at intersections.
- Safer crossing points for pedestrian and safer roads for cyclists.
