About the project

We’re working hard to keep everyone safe, whether they walk, cycle or drive. Alongside the Ōrākei Local Board, we are proposing to improve safe crossing facilities near Ōrākei school.

Ōrākei School has raised safety concerns because many students cross Coates Avenue to get to the bus stop and Grace Street, despite there being no nearby formal crossing facilities.

Listening to what you have to say is important to us. Your local knowledge can help us make better decisions, so together we can achieve the best outcomes for your neighbourhood.

This project is supported by the Ōrākei Local Board and delivered by Auckland Transport on their behalf funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work.

What we are proposing

We're making it safer to cross Coates Avenue and Grace Street, Ōrākei.

We're proposing on Coates Avenue:

  • Installing a zebra crossing raised to the footpath level and a pedestrian refuge island outside 110 Coates Avenue. The refuge will allow a safe space for people to wait for a gap in traffic.
  • Relocating the bus stop outside 110 to outside 106 Coates Avenue, with a new bus shelter.
  • Relocating the bus stop and shelter on the school side to be opposite 108 Coates Avenue.
  • Installing new footpaths, road markings, signage and yellow broken lines (no stopping at all times).
  • Relocating and installing new streetlights to support the new crossing and bus stop relocation.
  • Overall, this will result in removal of on street parking on both sides of Coates Avenue, a total of 18.

We're proposing on Grace Street:

Encourage drivers to slow down and help them see the existing crossing outside 8 Grace Street by:

  • Painting zebra markings on the existing crossing to improve visibility of the crossing by approaching drivers.
  • Installing new streetlights to light up the crossing.
  • Installing new road signage and road markings.
  • Extend the broken yellow line slightly outside Ōrākei school and 6 Grace Street to improve visibility.
  • This work will not result in any additional loss of parking spaces.

Benefits and impacts

This project aims to improve pedestrian safety for all road users, particularly for school children.

We want to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. These changes would:

  • Provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, particularly school children travelling to and from school.
  • Slowing motorists to a safe speed.
  • Raise pedestrians, especially children, crossing the road to be at eye-level of approaching motorists, making them easier to see from a distance.
  • Make it easier for motorists to see people waiting to cross the road.
  • Making it more comfortable for people with prams and wheelchairs to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
