Ōrākei school Crossings, Ōrākei
Consultation outcome
We want to thank the Coates Avenue and Grace Street community in Ōrākei for their engagement and feedback on our proposal to improve road safety for school students and the community.
After carefully reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with changes to the design.
We are no longer:
• Installing a raised zebra crossing outside 110 Coates Avenue.
• Installing a bus shelter in front of 106 Coates Avenue.
We now plan to deliver the following:
On Coates Avenue:
• Install an at-grade crossing which is a zebra crossing painted on the road with side islands outside 110 Coates Avenue.
• Relocate the bus stop outside 110 to outside 106 Coates Avenue, with the concrete hard stand.
• Relocating the bus stop and shelter on the school side to be opposite 108 Coates Avenue.
• Installing new footpaths, road markings, signage and broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times).
• Relocating and installing new streetlights to support the new crossing and bus stop relocation.
• Overall, this will result in removal of on street parking on both sides of Coates Avenue, a total of 18.
On Grace Street:
• Painting zebra markings on the existing raised table to formalise this raised table to be a raised crossing.
• Installing new streetlights to light up the crossing.
• New road signage and road markings.
• Extend the broken yellow line slightly outside Ōrākei school and 6 Grace Street to improve visibility.

Why was this decision made?
This project was requested by the Ōrākei School and others who raised concerns about students’ vulnerable safety when catching the bus and crossing the road. There are no formal crossing facilities near the school entrance, and drivers are not slowing down to a safe speed in a school zone.
We drafted the proposal with guidance from the school.
The Ōrākei Local Board supports keeping everyone safe whether they walk, cycle or drive. After receiving public feedback, they followed AT's recommendation to make the crossing on Coates Ave at-grade to reduce vibration impact. They also preferred to place the northern bus stop in front of 106 Coates Ave and omit the bus shelter based on feedback from the property owner.
This project is funded through the Local Board Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work.
What happens next
We anticipate these changes will be installed between May and August 2025. We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place. To stay informed about construction email Projects@at.govt.nz with Orakei School in the subject line
Community Feedback
These are some of the supportive comments we received:
• Lower speeds mean less deaths
• It would make crossing way safer and would also help slow vehicles on this road, this road is next to a school and the speed at which some cars go down this road is crazy. It will also make the using the busses way easier there have been plenty times I have or have seen others miss the bus because cars won't let them cross.
• Overall, I think it is good and will help contribute to safer street in Auckland. Increase visibility and manoeuvre ability especially with sun strike in afternoon for peak times.
• Support the upgrades to a zebra crossing on Grace Street to reduce confusion for drivers and pedestrian in regard to unsure who is intended to have right of way.
Concerns received included:
• Project is a waste of money
• Concern about the loss of parking spaces on both sides of Coates Avenue
