The Issues

When our Network Optmisation team did its study of Onewa Road, they found more could be done to improve travel for people who cycle, ride a scooter, or travel by other active modes.

Currently, a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians exists on the southern end of Onewa Road. However, there is no shared path on the northern end where the schools and churches are located, even though the footpath is wide enough to have one.

Additionally, the existing shared path on the southern end of Onewa Road has no clearly indicated ramp for cyclists to transition off the shared path and on the road towards Birkenhead Avenue intersection.

Our Proposed Solutions

To resolve these issues, we're proposing to establish a formal shared path on the northern end of Onewa Road for pedestrians and cyclists that would run along the existing footpath between the Birkenhead Avenue and Lake Road intersections, where the schools, churches, and several shops are located.

This would ensure cyclists have safe means to travel both sides of the Onewa Road corridor separate from vehicular traffic. We're also hoping it will help encourage more active modes travel (bike, scooter, walk, etc.) overall.

We're also proposing to indicate a formal transition ramp for cyclists with a sign and markings from the existing shared path to Birkenhead Avenue intersection.

Additionally, to help encourage safe travelling speeds, we're considering placing electronic speed indicator signs along the corridor to help alert drivers of how fast they're travelling relative to the speed limits.
