Shaping more accessible public transport - Pilot NZSL alerts on the AT Mobile app and share your feedback

What we are doing

Auckland Transport (AT) is partnering with Kara Technologies to pilot disruption alerts in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) in the AT Mobile App. These videos are signed by a lifelike digital avatar named Tūī and aim to make important transport updates accessible to Deaf customers in their primary language.

The pilot will run for three months, and applies to Western Line train services only. Customers can access the NZSL videos through links included in disruption notifications on the AT Mobile app. To participate, download the AT Mobile app and subscribe to Western Line alerts.

More information is available on the AT website.

What we want your feedback

To understand if this solution works for the Deaf community, we want you to tell us:

  • How clear and accurate the NZSL videos are
  • How useful the alerts are for your travel needs
  • Anything we could improve

Feedback closes on 1 September 2026.

How you can have your say

  • Complete the online survey

  • Email feedback (text or video) to ATEngagement@at.govt.nz with subject: NZSL trial
  • Send a WhatsApp video message to 021919593
  • Speak with us in person at events (details to be confirmed)

What happens next

We will review all feedback, and relevant technical details after the trial ends. Results will be analysed and a report with findings and next steps will be shared with stakeholders. This will inform future decisions.
