Improving safety and accessibility on Rewa Road

October project update: Proceeding with the footpath

We want to thank the Maraetai community for their engagement on our footpath plan for Rewa Road.

We considered the feedback received, and as a result we have updated our design.

We are proceeding with our plan to build a footpath with the following design changes:

  • Building out the existing kerb, with the width varying between 0.5 metres and 1 metre. This change is intended to accommodate the new continuous footpath while minimising the need for significant modifications to driveways.
  • No trees will be removed
  • No changes to retaining walls
  • Parking restrictions have been included to allow for vehicle passing opportunities
  • Parking restrictions to improve visibility at the bend near the Maraetai Hall

Why Rewa Road matters

Rewa Road connects residents to key destinations including Maraetai Park, public transport, local shops, and the Maraetai Beach Community Hall. Currently, only one side of Rewa Road (from Carlton Crescent) has a footpath, which can be inconvenient and unsafe for pedestrians.

Community benefits

  • Safer journeys – separating pedestrians from traffic reduces risk and encourages walking
  • Responds to customer requests
  • Healthier lifestyle – walking becomes a more attractive and inclusive way to get around
  • Better access – improved walking routes to the beach, public transport, and community facilities
  • Sustainable travel – walking is a key part of Auckland Transport’s vision for a greener, more connected city

Whether you're commuting, heading to the beach, or enjoying a stroll through Maraetai, this project aims to make your journey safer and more enjoyable.
