The Issues
When our Network Optimisation team did its study of Onewa Road, they observed people jaywalking across live traffic from Northcote College to reach the bus stop on the opposite side of the road (stop ID 4078) at the end of the school day. This unsafe behaviour has led to several near misses and disruption on the road.
Additionally, lots of pedestrians are using the bus stops outside of St Mary's Catholic Church to attend school, church services and visit the shops in the area. The bus stop in front of the church has a shelter with seating where people can wait for their bus protected from the elements, but the stop on the opposite side of the road does not offer any seating or protection.
Our Solutions
To resolve these issues and improve overall safety in this area, we had considered doing a trial closure of the southside bus stop across from Northcote College (stop ID 4078). However, after hearing feedback from the community about the impacts this change would have and getting a better understanding of the number of people using that stop, we have decided not to proceed with this change. Instead, we'll look at other ways to encourage safer crossing here.
We will be adding new bus shelter to the St Mary's bus stop across from the church (stop ID 4076) to give people waiting for their bus after school, church or to shop the same level of seating and protection those at the stop on the other side receive. This change will be implemented later this year in the summertime along with scheduled road maintenance works and should be completed before the 2026 school year starts.
