About the project

In October 2024, we completed Stage 1 of the improvements to the streetlights in Birkenhead Town Centre, on Birkenhead Avenue. With the support from the Kaipātiki Local Board, we plan to deliver Stage 2, which will focus on improving the lights on Mokoia Road (between #6 to #60 Mokoia Road), making the lights on the footpath and road in Birkenhead Town Centre better for everyone.

We’ll be doing work mostly during daylight hours and may need to do some work at night. Most of it must be done during daylight hours because of underground services beneath the road and footpath, such as gas mains, international fibre cables, water mains and electricity cabling for the streetlights.

Daytime works allow for the fastest possible progress whilst minimising construction risk.

  • We need to do a partial road closure, with one lane closed for machinery and equipment while our contractor is working.
  • We know this may cause an inconvenience, and we’ve tried to minimise this as much as possible. Please follow traffic management, detours and signs.
  • Bus stops and routes will be affected while this work takes place. AT bus services that are impacted will be communicated via the AT Mobile App and shared in advance of the works.
    • Information for bus services put on by the Ministry of Education will be communicated through the affected schools.
Where
Mokoia Road, between #6 to #60 Mokoia Road
When
Expected to start in May 2026, for up to 4 weeks
Hours of work
Day work: 7am to 7pm, in May 2026 – Traffic management to be set up between 6.30am and 7.30pm
What we’ll be doing
The work includes renewing the existing character globe lights in the town centre and installing new tall, road directional lights, improving visibility for motorists and people on foot.
Duration
Up to 4 weeks, 2 weeks on each side of Mokoia Road.
Why
  • The existing character globe lights in Birkenhead need to be replaced and we will install new LED bulbs to help with visibility at night.
  • Tall overhead streetlights are needed to improve visibility for motorists and people on foot in the town centre.
  • Both lights will make it safer and easier to travel in Birkenhead.
How travel is affected
  • During the day (7am – 7pm) traffic management with detours will be in place. Additional traffic management shared below.
  • Expect slower speeds while travelling through the area.
  • Clear signs will be in place and traffic managers will help keep things moving.
Things you should know
  • Plan ahead. Please follow the signs and drive carefully.
  • Check signs & AT Mobile for updated bus route changes

The changes we're making

  • Tall Town Centre streetlights: Install nine new 10-meter town centre street light columns on Birkenhead Avenue. This will be in addition to the existing 4-meter streetlights and globe lights in the town centre.
  • General street lighting improvements: As part of our maintenance programme, we will renew twelve 4-meter streetlights with improved fixtures in better locations and new infrastructure, including LED bulbs, updated equipment and underground cables.
  • Globe lights with amber lamps: Replace and upgrade the character globe lights within the township. This includes new infrastructure, such as LED bulbs, updated equipment and underground cables. The work will also shift these lights away from the kerb to prevent damage from large vehicles like delivery trucks
  • Removing aged and damaged equipment: We plan to demolish and remove dated infrastructure that is not fit for purpose, replacing these with improved LED lights and new lighting fixtures that are up to standard.

Benefits to your community

  • Tall Town Centre streetlights: Enhances the visibility for everyone travelling in the area at night. These lights will focus light levels covering a larger area, improving safety and security for businesses and people travelling through the area.
  • General street lighting improvements: We will check and improve the existing streetlights, making it easier for drivers to see oncoming cars, cyclists, and people walking or crossing the road.
  • Globe lights with amber lamps: The existing globe lights will be upgraded to preserve the town centre's character while improving their condition and futureproofing the infrastructure. It improves driver visibility so they can be seen by high sided vehicles including large truck and vans, while retaining the street's personality.
  • Makes the town centre safer and inviting. This will improve safety and visibility for motorists and people to see better at night, minimising the risk of collisions and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. It deters crime and helps make people feel safer when walking or driving after dark and enhances the overall look and feel of the area.
