The work has concluded

Update as of Oct 2024

This project is now completed

About the project

We’ve received a request from the Kaipātiki Local Board to improve lighting on the footpaths and roads in Birkenhead town centre. This work will include renewing the existing globe lights within the township and installing new tall directional lights to improve visibility for motorists and people on foot.

We’ll be doing work mostly during daylight hours and may need to do some work at night. It must be done during daylight hours because of underground services beneath the road and footpath, such as gas mains, international fibre cables, water mains and electricity cabling for the streetlights.

Some bus stops and routes will be affected while this work takes place. AT bus services that are impacted will be communicated via the AT Mobile App, and posters can be viewed or downloaded on this webpage.

Information for bus services put on by the Ministry of Education will be communicated through the affected schools.

We need to do a partial road closure, with one lane closed for machinery and equipment. We know this may cause an inconvenience, and we’ve tried to minimise this as much as possible. Please follow traffic management, detours and signs.

Update to planned closures from 3 Sept 2024

We’ve listened to concerns raised by the community and looked at better ways to minimise disruption as follows:

  • Birkenhead Ave open for morning peak (until 10 am)
  • Partial lane closure (northbound) in place 10 am-4 pm
  • Birkenhead Ave open for evening peak (4 pm – 7 pm)

These times are subject to change & may include night closures.

  • From 2 September 2024: The northbound traffic lane from the Hinemoa Street roundabout to the Highbury Bypass intersection will have temporary lane closures for two weeks
  • From 16 September 2024: Once the first part of the work is completed, we will shift to the southbound lane with temporary lane closures for vehicles travelling from the Highbury Bypass intersection to the Hinemoa Street roundabout.

The changes we're making

  • Tall Town Centre streetlights: Install nine new 10-meter town centre street light columns on Birkenhead Avenue. This will be in addition to the existing 4-meter streetlights and globe lights in the town centre.
  • General street lighting improvements: As part of our maintenance programme, we will renew twelve 4-meter streetlights with improved fixtures in better locations and new infrastructure, including LED bulbs, updated equipment and underground cables.
  • Globe lights with amber lamps: Replace and upgrade the character globe lights within the township. This includes new infrastructure, such as LED bulbs, updated equipment and underground cables. The work will also shift these lights away from the kerb to prevent damage from large vehicles like delivery trucks
  • Removing aged and damaged equipment: We plan to demolish and remove dated infrastructure that is not fit for purpose, replacing these with improved LED lights and new lighting fixtures that are up to standard.

Benefits to your community

  • Tall Town Centre streetlights: Enhances the visibility for everyone travelling in the area at night. These lights will focus light levels covering a larger area, improving safety and security for businesses and people travelling through the area.
  • General street lighting improvements: We will check and improve the existing streetlights, making it easier for drivers to see oncoming cars, cyclists, and people walking or crossing the road.
  • Globe lights with amber lamps: The existing globe lights will be upgraded to preserve the town centre's character while improving their condition and futureproofing the infrastructure. It improves driver visibility so they can be seen by high sided vehicles including large truck and vans, while retaining the street's personality.
  • Makes the town centre safer and inviting. This will improve safety and visibility for motorists and people to see better at night, minimising the risk of collisions and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. It deters crime and helps make people feel safer when walking or driving after dark and enhances the overall look and feel of the area.
