Time parking restrictions consultation for Melanesia Shops in Kohimarama
Proposal Outcome
In March 2026, we shared a proposal to improve parking time near Melanesia Shops in Kohimarama.
Following the consultation, we carried out further investigations and continued discussions with local businesses. Through this process, we found that time-limited parking restrictions can be challenging to balance, as different businesses often have differing parking needs.
We also recognised that changes to parking time limits can require ongoing enforcement to remain effective.
Based on the additional feedback received, there was limited support for changing the parking restrictions to 60 minutes, even for a reduced number of spaces. Many stakeholders felt that the current parking P30 parking restrictions should remain in place.
As a result, we will not be extending the current parking time outside #45-27 Melanesia Road from P30 to P60, from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday at this time
What we heard from the community
Parking availability and turnover
- Most feedback preferred retaining the existing 30-minute parking limit (P30).
- Many respondents felt P30 supports higher turnover and makes it easier for customers to find a parking space.
Supporting local businesses
- Several local businesses advised that most customer visits are less than 30 minutes and do not require longer parking times.
- Concerns were raised that increasing parking to P60 could reduce availability for customers making short visits.
Access to services
- Respondents highlighted the importance of convenient parking for people who require close access to local services and businesses.
Weekend parking demand
- A common concern was that longer parking times could encourage sports field users to occupy spaces for extended periods during weekend sporting events.
- Some respondents noted that longer-stay parking is already available on nearby streets.
Alternative suggestions
- A small number of respondents supported longer parking times for customers attending appointments or businesses that require longer stays.
- Suggested alternatives included retaining P30, introducing P45, or applying longer parking limits (such as P60 or P180) to a limited number of spaces only.
We sincerely thank everyone who shared their views. Your feedback plays an important role in helping us make informed decisions that reflect the needs of the local community.
