Mayoral Drive Bus Shelter Reinstatement
About the project
The city centre is undergoing a major transformation as we prepare for the opening of the City Rail Link, our new underground rail system. The CRL will be a game-changer for Auckland, giving thousands of people easier and better access to the city when it opens.
With the new Te Waihorotiu Station and midtown works nearing completion we want to inform you that we will be reinstating the bus stop and shelter at 210 Mayoral Drive.
The bus stop and shelter will move slightly when we reinstate it, and the bus lane on the southern side extended to allow for more stopping space.
Background
Buses are returning to Mayoral Drive after they were diverted to allow for the construction of City Rail Link. Along with our new rail system, buses need to be more frequent, more dependable, get people to the city faster, and connect to our new train stations.
This section of Mayoral Drive forms part of a key corridor for buses entering our city from the northwest and southwest of Auckland. Buses entering the city from these destinations will connect with the new Karanga-a-hape Station on Pitt Street, then travel via Vincent Street to Mayoral Drive and the new Te Waihorotiu Station, then to downtown via Albert Street.
Buses will have priority lanes along this route to enable reliable, high frequency public transport to and through our city. To accommodate these new routes and ensure there is enough space for new high frequency buses to pick up and drop off passengers, we are preparing to restore the bus stop and shelter that was previously outside 210 Federal St.

Better buses for the environment
We’re aiming for all bus services to and from the city centre to be 100% electric by 2030 as part of our Mission Electric to reduce emissions and create a transport future for Auckland that is cleaner, quieter, and safer. When buses start using this route initially, they will be a mix of electric and diesel vehicles.
What's next
We estimate works will begin around September or October, but we will be in touch closer to the time to confirm dates and duration. We’ll work to minimise disruption and ensure building access is always maintained.
The next time you will hear from us is when we have finalised the detailed design. We will also be in touch before any works start, and again before buses start using this route.
