We’re responding to requests for crossing safety on Matakana Valley Road, near the Matakana Pony Club and Matakana Tennis Club. This area is undergoing significant residential development, with more expected in the future, and there is a growing number of people walking to access the clubs’ facilities. Thanks to the Rodney Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’ll be installing new crossing facilities on Matakana Valley Road to provide the community with a safe, convenient crossing option.
The changes we’re making by March/April 2026:
Install a new crossing island outside 207 Matakana Valley Road to provide a safe crossing for accessing the Tennis and Pony Club. The crossing islands are a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing the road safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing.
New concrete footpath on both sides of on both sides of the crossings to give more room to wait to cross. Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating road users from people on foot.
New footpath kerb and gutters on both sides of Matakana Valley Road to make it safer for people walking, help with stormwater drainage and allow larger vehicles more space to drive through the crossing safely.
Install new pram ramps, making it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensuring those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
Rebuild the berm near the driveway of #207 Matakana Valley Road to support the new crossing.
Two new driver feedback signs to be installed in advance of the crossing in both directions. These signs improve driver awareness of their speed and encourage them to slow down on approaches to the crossing.
Provide new yellow tactile pavers in advance of and at the refuge island to help visually impaired people locate and safely cross the road.
Install two new streetlights on either side of the crossing on Matakana Valley Road, to help drivers see people crossing the road better at night.
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) on all approaches to the crossing to clear access and for better visibility.
A full-size drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of the page.
Benefits to your community:
Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs and reduces speed in the area.
Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves access to the Pony and Tennis clubs and visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
