About the project

Ōrākei local board has identified your area for improvements. On their behalf, we are proposing to improve pedestrian safety on Marua Road close to Michaels Avenue, Ellerslie. During our site investigation, we observed that there are many students using public transport and wanting to cross the road safely at this location.

The changes we’re making

  • A new zebra crossing located on the western side of Marua Road and Michaels Avenue intersection. This will result in hedge trimming on the Marua side of #114A Michaels Avenue.
  • Installing traffic islands in the middle of the crossing to separate the two lanes of traffic and provide additional safety for pedestrians crossing Marua Road.
  • Installing tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help people find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Painting new road markings and installing signage to support the zebra crossing.
  • Relocating the existing bus shelter from #46 Marua Road to #44 Marua Road.
  • Relocating the existing bus stop #7464 located between #44-46 Marua Road down further to #42-44 Marua Road.

These improvements would remove three on-street parking spaces. We acknowledge this can be inconvenient and have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible.

Benefits to your community:

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking, cycling and the bus, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving.

  • Slow motorists to a safer speed.
  • Improved connectivity for vulnerable road users.
  • Improved access to public transport facilities.

These changes are part of a bigger transport plan

Auckland Transport, local boards and ward councillors are working together to prioritise and address local road safety concerns.

This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund Programme. This programme uses funding within Auckland Transport’s annual budget to deliver on Local Board initiatives for local areas and communities.

What happens next

We will install these changes in June 2026.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
