About the project

Safety improvements at Marne Road and Onslow Road Intersection

We are working to make it easier and safer for you to access the intersection of Marne Road and Onslow Road in Papakura. The proposed roundabout will help slow vehicles and make it clearer and safer for people to move through the intersection, whether you are walking, cycling, driving, living nearby, working or visiting the area.

This intersection has been identified as a safety concern for the community. Between 2020 and 2024, 10 crashes were reported, including four minor-injury crashes. Most involved drivers crossing or turning from Onslow Road and not giving way to traffic on Marne Road. One crash involved a person cycling, and two involved people crossing Marne Road. Our investigation found that the main issues were drivers choosing unsafe gaps in traffic and the lack of suitable pedestrian crossing facilities. These improvements are intended to reduce crash risk and create a safer, more accessible and better-connected area for everyone who uses this intersection.

What we’re planning to do before June 2027

We are proposing the following safety upgrades at the Marne Road and Onslow Road intersection:

  • Install a new fully mountable roundabout to help slow traffic and support safer crossing and turning movements from Onslow Road.
  • Provide four new pedestrian crossings: three pedestrian refuge crossings on Onslow Road west and Marne Road, and one raised zebra crossing on Onslow Road east. The raised zebra crossing will only be built if the ground conditions are suitable.
  • Widen footpaths, realign kerbs and berms, and update road markings and signs to support the new layout.
  • Improve street lighting so the crossings and roundabout are easier to see, especially at night.
  • Install new broken yellow lines (NSAAT) to keep parked vehicles clear of the crossings and improve visibility for pedestrians and drivers. As a result, 24 on-street parking spaces will be removed on Marne Road, and 11 on-street parking spaces on Onslow Road.

This includes the following changes:

On Marne Road:

    • Remove 9 parking spaces outside Mansell Field on Marne Road north approach.
    • Remove 3 parking spaces outside 35 Marne Road on Marne Road north approach.
    • Remove 4 parking spaces outside 25 Onslow Road on Marne Road south approach.
    • Remove 8 parking spaces outside 23 Onslow Road, 39 Marne Road and 41 Marne Road on Marne Road south approach.

On Onslow Road:

    • Remove 4 parking spaces outside 35 Marne Road on Onslow Road west approach.
    • Remove 1 parking space outside 23 Onslow Road on Onslow Road west approach.
    • Remove 5 parking spaces outside 25 Onslow Road on Onslow Road east approach.
    • Remove 1 angle parking space outside Mansell Field on Onslow Road east approach.

You can view the proposed layout in the attached plans.

How this will benefit your neighbourhood

These improvements will help make the intersection safer and more predictable for everyone using the area. Key benefits include:

  • Better traffic flow and reduce delays on Onslow Road.
  • Safer and easier turning manoeuvres at the intersection.
  • Safer crossing environment for people walking through the area.
  • A clearer, more visible road layout.
  • Improved visibility and lower speed environment, enhance safety for all road users.
