Marcellin College (617 Mount Albert Road) - Crossing Upgrade
Consultation has concluded
Consultation Outcome
Earlier this year, Auckland Transport reviewed its approach to raised devices (like raised crossings) on arterial roads. This was done in response to the government’s strategic direction on speed management.
We developed an alternative design option, and after further engagement with the Local Board, we will be proceeding with the following safety improvements:
- High friction surfacing (HFS) approaching the pedestrian crossing to improve the skid resistance of the road surface, to assist with vehicle braking.
- Driver feedback signs (also known as speed indication devices) on approaches to the pedestrian crossing to display the speed of approaching vehicles.
- Advance stop boxes to provide a safe place for cyclists to stop and wait at the lights.
These changes will increase drivers' awareness of their travel speed as they approach the pedestrian crossing.
Auckland Transport will continue to monitor the speed and safety risk in front of Marcellin College and make further safety improvements if required. We will let the community know before any further improvements take place.
What happens next
We anticipate that these changes will be installed in October/November 2024. We’ll be in touch with directly affected residents before any changes take place.

About the project
Everyone across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland should be able to get to where they need to and back home safely. This includes people in cars, on bikes, on foot, on scooters, or on mobility devices.
The crossing outside of Marcellin College at 617 Mount Albert Road is a high-risk area. There were five recorded crashes in this area between 2017 and 2022, including one serious crash. The impact of these injuries on friends, Whānau and the wider community is immeasurable.
Our investigation found that vehicles are approaching the crossing at speeds above the speed limit. In addition, we found that during school pick-up and drop-off time, cars that are waiting for a gap in the traffic will often queue in the traffic lane, leading to congestion and blocking the pedestrian crossing.
What we are proposing
We're proposing to raise the pedestrian crossing outside Marcellin College. These changes include:
- Raising the pedestrian crossing.
- Widening the footpath on either side of the crossing.
- Advance stop boxes on the road.
- Extending the median island.
The pedestrian crossing will remain signalised, and in the same location.
Benefits and impacts
These changes would improve safety by:
- Providing more space on the footpath for pedestrians waiting to cross the road.
- Ensuring the pedestrian crossing remains clear of queueing traffic and reducing congestion.
- Encouraging motorists to travel at safer speeds when approaching this crossing, increasing the rate of survival in the event of an accident.
- Providing a safe place for cyclists to stop and wait at the lights.
We understand that this proposal will impact the way that vehicles enter the Marcellin College carpark. Auckland Transport has been in touch with Marcellin College and will work together to make this area safer for everyone.
