Why is Auckland Transport providing a bus layover facility?

Buses currently lay over on Mahuru Street so drivers can take breaks, change over, or prepare for their next service. Space for bus layovers in Newmarket is limited, and there is not enough room onstreet to support current and future services.

    The new offstreet facility will:

    • Improve the efficiency and reliability of bus operations

    • Reduce bus queuing and waiting on local streets

The Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 also requires bus drivers to have regular rest breaks and access to toilet facilities.

What is happening to the Wilsons Parking area on Mahuru Street?

AT owns this land, and it will be converted into the offstreet bus layover facility. Paid parking in this area will no longer be available once construction begins.

    Where can I park instead?

Newmarket has a wide range of parking options, with over 6,000 publicly available offstreet spaces, including privately owned car parks and Westfield Newmarket. Onstreet parking is also available on main arterial roads during evenings and outside peak times.

More information on parking options is available via the Newmarket Business Association website:

    Construction

Bus parking on Mahuru Street will still be needed while the facility is being built.  More information will be available before any construction starts.
