Aucklanders have told us they want more reliable and frequent public transport, and Auckland Transport is working to deliver this. As bus services improve particularly around Newmarket some changes are needed to keep buses running smoothly and reliably in the area.

What we’re doing

We are establishing a new off‑street bus layover facility at 1–3 Mahuru Street (underneath the motorway flyover), which will provide:

  • 13 dedicated off‑street bus layover spaces within a secure facility
  • Futureproofing for electric bus charging, supporting quieter, lower‑emissions buses over time
  • Improved facilities for bus drivers, supporting safe, well‑managed and respectful operations

This reflects our bus plan focus: not just adding services, but making sure the right infrastructure is in place to support a cleaner, more reliable network for the future.

What this means for Mahuru Street

With buses relocating off the street:

  • 8 of the existing 12 on‑street bus layover spaces will be reallocated
  • The remaining spaces will continue to be used for short‑duration bus layovers

Overall, this will reduce bus idling and waiting on Mahuru Street and return more street space to everyday use.

Changes to the paid parking area (future bus layover site)

The area currently leased by Wilsons Parking will no longer be available for paid parking, as it will be converted into the bus layover facility. Affected users will be given at least one month’s notice ahead of this change.

Sharing local knowledge

The off‑street bus layover facility and overall design are confirmed, and the project is progressing through detailed design.

This is not a consultation on whether the project will proceed. However, before plans are finalised, we want to check whether there is local or practical knowledge that could help refine on‑street parking and kerbside arrangements.

We welcome information about:

  • Business servicing or access needs
  • Local considerations or patterns of use we may not be aware of

This helps identify any gaps or unintended issues before construction begins.
