Mahon Way Pedestrian Mall

About the project

We are proposing to update the conditions and exemptions of Mahon Way pedestrian mall. This will allow it to align with the current environment and function as well as clearly state which vehicles are allowed where, at what time, and for what purpose. For more information, please read the Statement of Proposal under Documents heading on the right-hand side of this webpage. The consultation will be open for public submissions from 14 June 2024 until 17 July 2024 and you can present your submission at a hearing. 

What we are proposing

We are proposing to update the exemptions of the pedestrian mall. This means that the pedestrian mall can be accessed by the following:

• Cycles and wheeled recreational devices travelling 15km/h or less.
• A named food truck at a specified time only.
• Goods vehicles can enter and be driven on the areas labelled path (on map below). Goods vehicles can access and park only on certain areas and not on the path for the purpose of loading or unloading of goods or for the dropping off or picking up of people between 5:00am to 2:00pm (on any day of the week) for 15 minutes. 
• Emergency service vehicles.  
• Vehicles, with prior authorisation from Auckland Transport by way of an approved temporary traffic management plan, for the purpose of carrying out services for local businesses, residents, and public spaces. 

We are also proposing to:

• add motorbike parking on the Howe Street side of Mahon Way (with no time restriction). 
• add a P10 Goods Vehicles only Loading Zone (10 minutes at all times) on the Hereford Street side of Mahon Way.

Why are we proposing it

Mahon Street (now Mahon Way) was declared a pedestrian mall by Auckland City Council in 1988. Since then, Mahon Way and has been subject to many changes and new developments.

Updating the pedestrian mall will:

• Allow the 1988 pedestrian mall status (with its outdated conditions and exemptions) to become fit for purpose to suit Mahon Way in its current, modern state. 
• Clarify the exemptions of use (who can park, when, and for what purpose).
• Allow Auckland Transport to better manage this space. 

Benefits of the proposal

• Provide a safer, more pleasant environment for residents, business owners, customers and other people walking in the area. 
• Provide local businesses and residents with clarity on what is permitted.
• Enable Auckland Transport to effectively manage Mahon Way.

What we want your feedback on

You can play a role in shaping our city. We would like to hear feedback on the proposal and any concerns or issues you might have. This is an opportunity for you to share the affects you think the proposal might have, and why you support or oppose the proposal. Please feel free to send us suggestions or changes that will better address your concerns but that would also achieve the benefits outlined above.

There will also be a drop-in session on Mahon Way from 4pm-7pm on Monday 1 July where people can ask questions of the project team and provide feedback.

After the end of the public consultation period, submitters will have an opportunity to present their submission at an Auckland Transport hearing. Please let us know if you would like to present at the hearing and we will be in touch to let you know where and when the hearing will be. Submitters can provide feedback at the hearing using NZ Sign language and/or via an audio-visual link. We will contact submitters who would like to attend the hearing regarding where and when it will be held. 

What happens next

We’ll carefully consider all the feedback we receive in writing and during the hearing, and then decide the best way to move forward.
