Wyllie Road/Kenderdine Road Intersection

About the project

Road safety improvement at Wyllie Road/Kenderdine Road Intersection.

Upon receiving request from the community to help create a safer road environment, we are proposing changes at Wyllie Road/Kenderdine Road Intersection.

There are currently no pedestrian crossing facilities here, and the two existing bus stops at 23 and 32 Wyllie Road have no road markings.

To address these concerns, we are proposing road safety improvement near the intersection to enhance crossing safety and improve the visibility of nearby bus stops for both drivers and commuters.

We expect these changes will improve overall road safety in the neighbourhood and benefit all road users.

We would appreciate your feedback on the proposed changes.

What we are proposing

We are proposing the following:

At the Intersection:

  • Upgrade the traffic island at the intersection to a pedestrian refuge crossing.
  • Adjust the alignment of the pram crossing points with the pedestrian refuge island to make crossing the road easier.
  • Build out the kerb on both sides to reduce the crossing distance.
  • Install tactile pavers, a yellow guidance marker to help visually impaired people find their way and safely cross the road.
  • Install streetlights to improve visibility at the crossing.
  • Reallocate five on-street parking spaces on Kenderdine Road for the crossing and paint broken yellow line markings.

AT Wyllie Road:

  • Mark “Bus Stop” on the road at the bus stop near 23 and 32 Wyllie Road to improve safety and visibility of the bus stops.
  • Paint broken yellow lines markings around the bus stops to provide access, and improve visibility.

Please refer the drawing for more details.

This project is supported by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, and is funded through the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund used to make improvements based on community priorities, that may not be covered by other programmes of work.

Auckland Transport will be delivering the project on behalf of the Local Board.

Benefits and impacts

  • Safe crossing facilities make it easier and stress-free for you, our Tamariki, and our community to commute and be out and about with ease and confidence in your neighbourhood
  • Pedestrian refuge islands act as traffic calming measures and alert drivers to reduce vehicle speed
  • People can safely wait on the raised island to finish crossing the road if they are unable to cross the entire road in one go, improving overall pedestrian safety
  • Alerts drivers to slow down on approach, allowing better speed control
  • Improve visibility and ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists approaching the intersection.
  • Make the two existing bus stops more visible and easier to identify to both drivers and pedestrians
  • Parking changes involve removing five parking spaces along Kenderdine Road and painting broken yellow lines so that oncoming motorists can see pedestrians crossing the road. Another five spaces on Wyllie Road will be used for access and marking 'Bus Stops to designate the existing bus stops
