Manukau, Pah, and Great South Roads are some of Central Auckland's busiest roads. Manukau and Pah Road move up to 36,000 vehicles while Great South Road moves up to 18,000 vehicles daily. During peak time Manukau Road and Pah Road has up to 14 buses per hour and Great South Road has 9 buses including 7 double-deckers. These buses have moved around 1 million passengers from January to March this year.

To keep up with the city's growth and ensure people and goods can move efficiently, we need to keep improving efficiency, safety and traffic flow of these roads. To do just that, we’re proposing a series of low-cost changes that can be implemented quickly with minimal construction disruption.

Proposed improvements

  • Extending the operating hours of the T3 lanes in both directions on Manukau Road (Owens Road - Greenwoods Corner) and Pah Road (Greenwoods Corner – Trafalgar Street) and a small section of Manukau Road heading away from Newmarket past Greenwoods Corner

Currently the T3 transit lanes operate between 4-7pm. Due to school traffic and flexible working hours, congestion is becoming an issue from 3pm onwards. To improve this, we are proposing to extend the operating hours to start at 3pm (running 3-7pm). This will reduce bus travel time from 29 minutes to 15 minutes making public transport more reliable in the area.

  • Extending the operating hours of the Great South Road bus lane

The bus lane currently operates between 4-7pm. Due to school traffic and flexible work hours, congestion is becoming an issue from 3pm onwards. To improve this we propose to:

  • Extend the operating hours of the bus lane in the southbound direction between St Marks Road and Green Lane West to start at 3pm (running from 3-7pm).
  • Extend the operating hours of the bus lane in both direction between Greenlane Lane West and Campbell Road to start at 3pm (running from 3-7pm).
  • Extending the bus lane on Great South Road

There is a small area on Great South Road near Green Lane West – outside Woolworths – where there is gap between the bus lane and bus stops. We are proposing to extend the existing bus lane by 40m to connect it with the bus stops. Route 70 buses travel along Great South Road, the second most popular bus route in Auckland. Our improvements will ensure safe bus movements and improve reliability.

  • No stopping on road near 84-88 Manukau Road

Vehicles parking in the 10-minute spaces in front of 86-88 Manukau Road causes sudden lane changes for drivers turning right from Owens Road or continuing straight. We propose installing broken yellow lines to prevent this, impacting 4 on-street parking spaces.

  • Afternoon clearway on northbound side of Manukau Road between Epsom Girls’ Grammar Sports Centre and Alpers Ave

This section of Manukau Road already has a morning clearway. However, heavy traffic during school pick-up hours causes long queues and affects vehicles connecting to Newmarket or the motorway via Gillies Avenue. We propose adding an afternoon clearway from 3pm to 7pm to help vehicles move efficiently through this main road towards Newmarket and access the motorway.

About the Network Optimisation Programme

Auckland's future travel demand will largely rely on making the best of our existing transport corridors. The Auckland Network Optimisation Programme aims to enhance the city's transport network. By making small, cost-effective changes to roads and paths, the programme seeks to improve travel choices, road safety, and overall efficiency.
