Project Update (February 2025)

We will be renewing the wharves on Kawau Island in April to ensure they remain operational for both locals and tourists. Normal ferry services should continue with minimal disruption.

We are hosting a drop-in session for residents on Monday, 24 February, at the following locations and times:

  • School House Bay Wharf - 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM by the shed
  • South Cove Wharf - 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM by the shed

About the project

South Cove and Schoolhouse Bay are Kawau island’s wharves that connect the community to our ferry services, and we need to do some maintenance work in April 2025 to keep them operational for locals!

The work we’ll be doing from April 2025

  • The older sheds on both wharves will be removed and replaced, we’ll also be replacing piles, braces and decking.
  • Work is planned to start around April 2025, depending on design completion and when construction material arrives from overseas.
  • We will ask for community’s input on the sheds recognising their importance to the community.
  • We will have community info sessions to answer questions on Monday 24 February 2025.
  • We’ll keep you updated on confirmed dates before we start the work.

Benefits to your Community

  • Continued use of South Cove & Schoolhouse Bay wharves by residents and visitors.
  • Maintaining our facilities gets you safely around Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and home to your whānau.

What you need to know when we start the work

  • The team will work around tidal and weather conditions, which may cause delays at the exposed South Cove Wharf.
  • There might be some noise, but we’ll try to minimise it.
  • Normal ferry services should continue without disruption. We’ll plan the construction to minimise public access impact, though some sections of the wharf will need to be closed at times.

Where we’ll be working

  • Our contractors will be on and around the wharves in order to replace piles.
  • Please follow our contractors instructions once on site to keep the area safe for all.
  • We'll give you more details about start/end times and dates when this is confirmed

How to contact us
