About the Project
As part of our Road Safety Programme, we’re planning safety improvements at the intersection of Kaipātiki Road and Stanley Road, which has been identified as a high-risk location.
Within the five-year period (2020-2024), eight crashes were reported within a 50-metre radius of the intersection. This included one serious injury crash, three minor injury crashes, and four non-injury crashes. These crashes primarily involved loss of control or a failure to give-way at the roundabout entry points.
When we visited the site, we also saw that the pedestrian crossing on Stanley Road no longer has its front island. This means people crossing the road don’t have a safe waiting point and are more exposed to vehicles moving through the roundabout.
The changes we're making include:
Replacing the existing broken pedestrian crossing with a new crossing further south of the intersection, including new pram crossings and tactile pavers, to create a safer and more visible crossing point.
Installing high-friction surfacing on Stanley Road and on the southbound approach of Kaipātiki Road to improve braking performance.
Painting new ‘SLOW’ markings on a red surface on all approaches to increase driver awareness and encourage slower speeds as vehicles approach the roundabout.
Relocating the existing bus stop markings and signage outside #108 Stanley Road to meet current design standards.
The drawing above is available for download to the right side of this page.
Benefits to your community
Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the roundabout, improving safety for everyone.
Crossing Islands provide a safe place for people to wait for a gap in traffic before completing their crossing.
What happens next
We will be in touch with local residents, organisations and businesses prior to any work taking place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
